Technology Use in Education

There is not any denial that technology plays an extremely important role in today's education. Files are no longer stored in a manilla folder, but on a flashdrive. Paper and pencil notes are almost extinct thanks to laptops in the classroom. Many students have never heard of an overhead projector on a cart due to the entrance of PowerPoint. Now, some English classes have computers on each students' desk, laptops are available for check out for those who can't afford one themselves, etc.

Although technology has taken over the schools, there have been some concerns for technology in the education system. This concern isn't because the technology isn't available, but due to the lack of funds and other factors, classrooms haven't gotten the pleasure of being introduced to these past luxuries, and today's necessities.

Funding has become the main issue when it comes to technology in the education system. In an interview, teacher Lily Edward told a reporter, "The administration on the one hand pushes teachers to use technology in the classroom but on the other hand fails to provide funds for training or equipment" (Williamson, 2001).

In English classrooms, computers and/or laptops have become high in demand. Not only does it reduce the use of paper, it becomes easier for students to work in class and be able to ask questions during class time. For one high school in Martinsville, Virginia, funds were tight, but somehow, English teacher Mary Compson raised money through grants to be able to provide laptops for her classroom (Winston, 2010).
